What to Do Before Your NJ Brand Photoshoot: A Step-by-Step Guide

Planning a brand photoshoot? That’s a major step for any small business owner or entrepreneur, and a great investment in your visibility and growth! A little prep goes a long way.

As a NJ brand photographer, I've worked with dozens of entrepreneurs across New Jersey and North Jersey, and I know how much smoother your session can go with just a few thoughtful steps.

Whether you're a coach, creative, or small business owner, the goal is the same: a stress-free day where you feel confident, camera-ready, and truly yourself.

Let’s get you prepared like a pro.

Timing Is Everything: When to Schedule Your Session

For better or worse, we have seasons in the northeast, and there are good ones and bad ones to shoot in. The best time of year for New Jersey brand photography is between April and October, when the weather tends to be warm, sunny, and ideal for both indoor and outdoor photos.

Of course, shoots can happen year-round, especially if you're using a studio or your home office. But if you have flexibility, aim for spring through early fall. If you plan to have your shoot in the summer, aim for early morning. You'll thank yourself for not freezing in your power blazer or sweating through your favorite linen shirt.

Get Camera-Ready With Beauty Prep

Looking your best doesn't mean looking perfect. It means feeling confident and polished in a way that feels like you. Here’s some tips on how you can prepare!

  • Book professional hair and makeup services. Your photographer should have trusted pros to recommend, or you can look at Glamsquad, aka the equivalent of Uber for hair and makeup pros — they can come to your home or the studio!

  • Schedule a nail appointment. At the very least, get a manicure, since your hands will be in many of the photos, some of them being close-ups.

If you won’t be showing your feet, you can skip the pedi, but…why would you? Treat yo’self!

  • If you’re planning to get a haircut, do it a week or two in advance — not the day before! Give yourself time to correct a bad trim if needed, plus letting your hair settle in.

  • If you’re not booking professional hair services, consider a blowout or styling session the day before or in the morning of your shoot.

  • On the topic of treating yo’self, get a gentle facial, but do it well ahead of time. And DON’T use this as an opportunity to try any last-minute peels or new treatments that could cause reactions.

Not into professional glam? Totally fine. Even a quick makeup tutorial, a good skincare routine and staying hydrated can help you feel more confident in front of the camera. The goal is to feel like the best version of yourself, not someone else entirely.

Outfit Planning: Give Yourself Plenty of Time

Getting some hot new looks for your big day? As you should! Just make sure to follow a few pro tips so you’re fitted, pressed, and ready to go on shoot day!

  • Consider working with a stylist. Many can do small one-hour virtual sessions, where they will either audit outfits you already have planned and make recommendations, or help you create a new wardrobe just for the day! Bonus points: the looks your stylist will help you buy can be used beyond the shoot!

  • Shop and order with time to spare. If something needs to get shipped, you want to ensure it will arrive in time to try everything on and actually move around in it, and get items tailored if needed.

  • Steam or prep outfits the night before so they're shoot-ready. You don’t want to be wasting time on set getting wrinkles out. Bonus points: Make things easy on yourself, and snatch a small portable clothing rack to keep everything organized and wrinkle-free the day of your shoot instead of digging through garment bags or laying everything on a chair.

And don't forget to send photos of your outfits to your photographer ahead of time! We love helping you narrow down your choices and making sure everything fits your brand vibe and the locations we've chosen.

Props, Products, and Your Personal Touch

Props are part of the storytelling magic. Think:

  • your laptop,

  • favorite mug,

  • branded packaging,

  • books,

  • journals,

  • or tools of your trade.

These details make your photos feel authentic and specific to you.

Before shoot day:

  • Clean your props! Wipe down your laptop screen and keyboard — smudges show up in photos! This also goes for your glasses and any accessories

  • Remove sticky notes from books or planners (unless they're intentional)

  • Place everything in a crate or tote bag so it's easy to transport

You'll thank yourself when everything's in one place and ready to go, instead of scrambling to find that one thing you know you packed somewhere.

Bring a Hype Squad!

Shoot days are always more fun with a crew, so invite a friend (or several!) to come along. They can:

  • Stand in as a mock client for certain shots

  • Help things run smoothly on set

  • Keep the energy high and cheer you on throughout the shoot!

Just make sure to give them direction on what to wear if you will have them in your photos (your photographer can help with that!). As a thank you, ask your photographer to take a few headshots for your friends so that they can use them on their social media profiles as well!

Brand photos aren't just about how you look. They're about how you feel. Surround yourself with people who help you shine, especially if being in front of the camera feels vulnerable or unfamiliar.

The Bottom Line

Prepping for your New Jersey branding photography session doesn't have to be overwhelming. A little planning makes a huge difference in how confident and relaxed you'll feel on camera, and it always shows in the final gallery.

When you show up prepared, you can actually enjoy the process instead of stressing about the details. And that's when the magic happens.
