Bay Area Video Production: A Brand Video for a Fashion Stylist

A blonde woman faces an SF Bay Area brand videographer with a camera and a teleprompter for an intro video shoot. There is a camera light to the side of them.

We’re all about the stories here at Solhaus Media, and fashion stylist Abby Young has a great one. A former 8th grade teacher-turned fashionista, Abby’s students would often tell her that she looked like a runway model when she’d walk in between their desks.

Her background in education is a good reason to work with her – she doesn’t just select looks for you. She takes the time to explain and teach why some outfits look better than others.

Abby’s business was showing a tremendous amount of growth, so she knew it was time to hone in on her marketing and invest in a brand video that would help her keep the expansion going.

Honing In On An Audience For Your Brand Video

There are two different ways to go about creating a story for your brand video. Historically, I have always advised my clients to create a story for the business they are building and creating for the future. Abby said she has two different client bases, one being folks seeking out personal styling, and the other being bigger commercial contracts. The latter was a branch of her business she was just starting to grow, while the former was a part of her business that was already a well-oiled machine.

So when she said that she wanted to create a brand video that focused around her personal styling, it initially begged the question of, “Why try to fix something that’s already working, versus bring attention to a new offer?”

Ultimately it ended up being the right call. The personal styling side of her business grew so much she was able to bring on two employees, who could help her expand her business into other areas later.

B-Roll Brand Video vs. A-Roll Brand Video

When we first worked with Abby in August 2023, we settled on creating a B-Roll brand video to keep costs down.

A B-Roll brand video, or a “perfume ad” as I like to affectionately call it, is a string of video clips without dialogue edited together to tell a story. Brands like Dior and Louis Vuitton use this approach with their TV ads to evoke certain stories and emotions.

I liken it to individuals who are deaf or blind and have heightened senses – removing dialogue heightens the audience’s perception in different ways.

The final product is one of my favorite videos ever created for a client; so why did I still feel like something was missing?

Inserting Your Voice Into Your Brand Video

As beautiful as the B-Roll brand video for Abby was, there I felt like not having her voice in it was doing a disservice to anyone who would be watching it.

Building a personal brand when you are offering a 1:1 service is imperative. Your future clients and customers want to know who YOU are. They can get a taste of it from just visuals, but they won’t get the whole story without you speaking to them.

So a year later, I approached Abby and told her that I think we should write a script and add A-Roll to her video.

While this meant we ultimately lost some of the beautiful imagery I was so proud of in her initial video, it also meant that Abby’s future clients were able to get a feel for both Abby and her brand with this new video.

We also captured some new B-Roll for Abby to use on her website and social media, building on to her media library.

What do you think? Which video do you like more?
